While compiling the data for the Caribbean & Co. Digital Marketing Index 2015 for 35 Caribbean Destinations, we were not surprised to see that Facebook was the number one social media channel. Facebook has 1.49billion monthly active users with 968million of those users logging into the network daily. However, we were surprised by its level of dominance. In total, 4.5million of the 5.1million social media followers for these 35 Caribbean destinations were on Facebook. This represents approximately 87% of the social media fans across the 35 Caribbean destinations. Twitter trailed with approximately 509,000 followers (10%) and Instagram with approximately 123,000 followers (2.5%).
Below is the top 10 Caribbean destinations based on Facebook fans. Jamaica with 17% of the social media fans overall, leads on Facebook 825,000 fans — that’s 255,000 more fans that Puerto Rico, who are second on the list. Jamaica whose marketing slogan is currently “The Home Of All Right” has relatively good engagement with most of their Facebook posts with lots of likes, comments and shares. This is ultimately what matters for all of these Caribbean destinations — connecting with there fans with the hope that sometime in the not too distant future, they’ll visit to enjoy and explore the best of what each has to offer.
